Experiencing the Netherlands

I must admit I've been starting to feel ashamed when I always have to ask people if they speak English; then they ask me how long I've been in the Netherlands and I feel even worse because it's been 8 months and I don't speak Dutch nor really have I lived in Dutch society. I suppose being away for the majority of the 8 months has not helped; however it's a strange feeling living in a country and not feeling a connection to the society.

However, in the past week, I had the opportunity to meet with lots of wonderful Dutch people at the National Conference for AIESEC in the Netherlands, which I was invited to chair! It was a great experience to get to see what AIESEC is like in the Netherlands and to get to interact with Dutch people.

Some of the highlights from my experience:
1. Lots of Dutch AIESEC members speak or want to speak Spanish. It was really cool having conversations with Dutch people in Spanish and talk to them about how they can go on exchange in SSGN!

2. AIESEC in Jordan partnership launch! It was INCREDIBLE to be part of witnessing the launch of the Netherlands as the partner country for the Jordan expansion. The launch took place at the ING House (ING's beautiful corporate offices located in Amsterdam) and along with the members present, there were several partners and Advisory Board members present. Truly a historical moment!

3. Meeting the new MCP of AIESEC in the Netherlands, Mohcine!

4. Reading random Dutch phrases from a book while the entire MC corrected my spelling and in general laughed at my prononciation. :)

Overall the experience was wonderful to get to feel a little bit more connected to the country that I currently call 'home'.

Dankewel AIESEC in Nederlands!
